Growth companies reshape business life: analysis over the 2010-2013 growth period

During the 2010–2013 growth period, Tampere Region had 72 growth companies in which the initial employment was at least ten people and which grew at least 20% annually over the next three years (definition of a growth company preferred by OECD and Eurostat). The attached graphs also include companies with an annual growth of 10% in order to present more extensive results. According to latest statistics, there were 227 such companies in Tampere Region.

The number of growth companies in Tampere Region has increased in pace with Finland's highest growing regions over several review periods in succession, which is one of the most positive signals in the situational picture. The region accounts for slightly more than 9% to over 10% of all of Finland's growth companies, depending on growth criteria. In particular, companies with lower initial employment and growth expectations have increased significantly in Tampere Region during the 2010–2013 growth period. This is an indication of the slight growth in the field of small and medium-sized companies and the positive pace of startup companies at the beginning of the decade.

Growth companies are reshaping and modernising the business structure in Tampere Region, increasing employment in high-competence services. The majority of growth companies growing at a rate of at least 20% a year are in industries of various business services (N and M), construction (F), and information and communications (J). More moderately growing companies are found in industry (C), in particular. As a result, the traditional manufacturing industry seems to be fairly capable of growth and reform in the region.

The distribution of growth companies over various industries reflects the effects of social directions of change, such as the aging population, digitisation and private labour leasing. For example, there are several growth companies associated with housing, domestic and medical transportation services for the elderly. Also the software industry and machine and process engineering services stand out.

The two fastest growing companies, reaching an annual growth rate of more than 100% during the 2010–2013 growth period, represent professional activities (Intel Finland Oy) and the food industry (Saarioinen Oy). On a national level, more than half of all growth companies have had a genuine increase in personnel related to expanded operations. Other factors explaining growth are, for example, related to changes in their specific groups (e.g. change of registered office) and mergers. However, information about the reasons for growth is not available in more detail than on a national level.

Through comparative visualisation, it is possible to review the business fields of growth companies in different regions. A circle represents a growth company, and its colour indicates the business field. The size of the circle indicates the increase in the number of personnel during the 2010–2013 growth period. Through the menus on the right, you can select different regions for your review on the basis of the ELY Centre division.
