Internationality 2015: More boost in exports from international talents?

Human capital is becoming internationalised in Tampere Region. International resources, i.e. the foreign labour available to the labour market, have increased. The volume of immigrating labour, i.e. workers, the unemployed and users of labour services, comes to 6,500 people in the region. In addition, student and researcher exchange programmes at higher education institutions are accelerating the internationalisation process in Tampere Region.

Unemployment statistics show that we are not fully able to integrate international experts into the region's business life. For example, the number of academically educated immigrants has nearly doubled over the past few years (2010: 250 people, 2014: 434 people). In Tampere Region, the integration of international experts into the labour market and the regional community is supported, for example, through the network-based Talent Tampere cooperation.

Being traditionally dominated by industry, Tampere Region has suffered from the decrease in exports. The value of industrial exports fell by nearly 10% last year. It is essential to find ways to better match business life with internationally networked labour reserves.

The media presence of Tampere was unusually high in the international media in 2013. When used as a search term, the word “Tampere” was linked to new products with a positive image, such as the launch of Nokia's super camera, Jolla and Angry Birds Land. Last year, international visibility was not as extensive.

Where media visibility indicates the image of a region, the number of international airline passengers represents physical attainability and connectivity, including encounters with and actual interest towards the region. The number of international airline passengers has decreased substantially in recent years. The aim is to make corrections to the situation i.e. through the AiRRport vision and its underlying projects.

Talent Tampere cooperation allows international experts to better meet employers in Pirkanmaa. The Talent Tampere strategy supports the networking and strengthening of international expertise. Network cooperation is coordinated by Tredea, while the region's central providers of labour and immigration services, universities and interest groups are committed to fulfilling its objectives as part of their own work. http://talenttampere.fi/

Organised on 7–8 December 2015, the Twinkle event offers a concrete example of what immigrant human resources are able to produce. Twinkle is the largest business event in Finland, focusing on international competence and growth. It is mainly planned and organised by volunteer immigrants in the region. http://twinkletampere.fi/

Tampere Region is reinforcing its connections with international development networks. For example, the Vanguard Initiative for New Growth through Smart Specialisation is an initiative launched by pioneering European regions to strengthen their cooperation in the field of innovation. Vanguard Initiative regions are utilising their smart specialisation strategies, building shared roadmaps and updating their partnerships in order to create jobs, growth and investment. The initiative communicates the significance of independent cooperation and smart specialisation and its resulting competitiveness to European decision-makers. Tampere Region chaired the Vanguard network in 2015.
